Mahler: Symphony No. 8

A frequent visitor to Salzburg in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s was James Levine. A high point of this period – and as a contribution to the Mahler celebrations of 2011 – is the “Resurrection” Symphony, which he conducted in 1989 with the Vienna Philharmonic and Vienna State Opera Chorus in a reading that was both powerful and highly emotional. The two soloists were Kathleen Battle and Christa Ludwig.
