Miguel Ángel Gómez-Martínez


Miguel Angel Gómez Martínez was born in Granada and conducted his first public concert at the age of seven. He studied in Granada, Madrid, and the United States, as well as in Vienna with Hans Swarowsky. He has appeared as resident or guest conductor in major opera houses including Berlin, Vienna, Munich, Covent Garden, Paris, Houston, Florence, Chicago, La Fenice, San Carlo Naples, Palermo, Rome, La Scala. He has conducted the orchestras of Leipzig, Dresden, Munich, Cologne, Vienna, Buenos Aires, Bamberg, Oslo, Suisse Romande, Helsinki, Houston, Denver, Tokyo and the major orchestras in Spain. He has made frequent appearances at the Festivals of Berlin, Munich, Macerata, Aix-en-Provence, Orange, Granada, Santander, San Sebastián, Helsinki, Savonlinna and elsewhere. From 1997 to 2004 he was music director of the Valencia Orchestra in Spain. He was appointed music director of the Bern Opera in 2000 and in 2004 returned to the Mannheim National Theatre. He has composed Suite Burlesca, Sinfonía del Descubrimiento, Cinco canciones sobre poemas de Alonso Gamo and the Sinfonía del Agua. He has recorded for a number of leading companies, is a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Granada, honorary member of various musical associations, and gold medalist of the City of Granada. His Majesty King D. Juan Carlos I awarded him the Commendation of the Order of Civil Merit.
